What is Te Mate Karawaka?
Te Mate Karawaka (measles) is a serious and highly contagious viral illness. It spreads easily through the air when people cough, sneeze, talk, or even breathe and can cause complications such as lung infections, diarrhoea, and swelling of the roro (brain).
Symptoms of this māuiui can include:
- Fever over 38°C
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Sore, red eyes
- Rash starting on the face and spreading over the tinana
How can I protect myself and my whānau?
The MMR vaccine is the best way to protect yourself, your tamariki, and your hapori from this māuiui. Two doses (after 12 months of age) provide strong protection.
