Technology Utilisation
Te Wharekura o Nga Papaka o Rangataua
Tauira and tutors outside of Te Wharekura o Nga Papaka o Rangataua
Te Wharekura o Nga Papaka o Rangataua objectives are to ensure all students in its care are given an education which enhances their learning, builds on their needs and respects their dignity, their uniqueness, indeed their tino
rangatiratanga.
Te Wharekura o Nga Papaka o Rangataua has identified a project to assist in meeting the objectives. This project being an Information and Communication Technology Lab (ICT) with videoconferencing capability.
The first goal is to improve the skills of students in the ICT area to a level beyond what can be achieved at present. With the various capabilities a facility like this brings, students will be hands-on with present and future technology.
The second goal is
to broaden student’s knowledge in the school curriculum
areas. The videoconferencing capability will allow ‘students’
to connect to specialist kaiako by way of the internet and
video conferencing facilities. In the near future this
technology will permit connections between up to 200
schools and centres in Aotearoa alone. Kaiako from a wide
subject area are already being professionally extended to
deliver their expertise in this way. From their own centre,
they deliver their programmes into classrooms and centres
around the country. In turn, students are learning from
those who have a wide range of expertise that would
otherwise not be available to them without this
technology.
The third goal is to provide adult IT/ICT learning programs through CISCO Systems which will be know as Kura Po.
Direct Resourcing assisted Te Wharekura o Nga Papaka o Rangataua to
establish an ICT Lab by making available various
equipment.
Whenua Tau
The above picture is an example of a backdrop that can be used within a Digital Story
Whenua Tau is an existing group funded by Direct Resourcing, who has a high quality of reporting and programmes under various projects, which is why Direct Resourcing has chosen to support Whenua Tau in their new project of Digital Stories.
Whenua Tau in conjunction with Eidos Design held a presentation for Direct Resourcing showing what a Digital Story can look like. The layers of information you can interact with are endless.
This project will offer every hapu in the Western Bay of Plenty the opportunity of telling their stories and having it recorded in digital format. It will be a two stage process firstly the scoping of the project, advertising the concept to all hapu to gauge the interest out there. Secondly, working with hapu to have their story
digitalised.
The purpose is to record the matauranga, as much of our knowledge or our identity as a people is being lost with our kaumatua. It is important that the lesser known local legends are recorded not just the Maui stories.
The project proposes to develop an interactive CD learning tool for our people. The foundation/framework will be a three minute short story. From this base, further information is provided through links that will highlight points of significance with the story.
Link possibilities could include, an interview with story-teller/kaumatua, carvings shown have a link to a brief description of their history, further information about significant places within the story, a significant waiata playing in the background.
The final product could be used in schools, museums, local heritage/tourism information centres, distribution to hapu
iwi.
Direct Resourcing assisted Whenua Tau in the two stage process, scoping
and working with hapu to develop and tell their stories
and having it recorded digitally.
